Introduction to "a little girl called squeaks' blog

Writing this book has made me more aware of my responsibility to stand up for abused children. No child should have to live a life of abuse, neglect or the effects of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome like Laura has. I realize the answer to solving these problems are complex, however, there has to be an answer.
It is my desire through this website to increase the awareness and foster discussion on how we as a society can become the voice of these dear children.

Please join me in being that voice.

Congratulations Laura, (Squeaks) for being ten years sober. You need to be very proud of yourself, with God's help you have managed to change your life around.

  2. Laura, you are an inspiration to everyone that has read your book, and I am sure to everyone that knows you. You have chosen, with God's help, a life of sobriety, and serving God. We cannot choose what life throws at us, but we can choose what we do with it. You are an amazing person, God Bless you!
Debbie, Thank you for taking the time and effort to write this book for Laura. Your sense of humour rings loud and clear, making the book enjoyable and uplifting, while exposing such a sad and difficult topic. We have all been blessed! (Leanna)

L-R, Laura Gilbert and Debbie Maddigan
Chilliwack, B.C. - If you are looking for a good read this long weekend, and you don't mind a heavy storyline, check out the new book "A Little Girl Called Squeaks". It's the biography of Chilliwack care giver Laura Gilbert.
She grew up on the Downtown East Side of Vancouver. Her mother had her fair share of addiction problems and her life paralleled that. Laura spent the better part of her life from ages 12 to 19 in foster care. Now with many years of recovery behind her, she received a gift from a health professional. It’s a way to give back to single moms like her, who are struggling.
"I had to get outside help, and when I did that, my psychologist had an interesting thought. Why don’t you write a book about your life story."
Shortly after that, Laura ran into Paster Debbie Maddigan, who became the author of the bio. Madigan became a mentor.
"Four or five years ago, I was pastoring in a church. I was a women’s pastor for single parents, and Laura’s youngest daughter was going to have a baby and they needed some help."
That started the friendship which went from supplying Laura with the necessities of caring for her kids, to eventually telling Laura’s story in print.
Ironically, this was her first crack at being an author.

  4. Elaine TocherI ordered your book from The Book Depository in the UK. I can always get books I am looking for from them and shipping is free anywhere in the world. Just takes a little longer.I just finished your book today after a marathon reading session on this rainy day at home by myself. First, let me admit that the only reason I ordered and then read this book is because my very old (you know what I mean :) ) and dear friend wrote it. I am not one to spend a lot of time or thought on soul searching and/or reasoning how or why. And as such, I also have very little interest in books or articles that even hint at journeys of self-discovery. I am very fortunate to have led a fairly uneventful and smooth road in this life. And I think because of that, I just 'am' and choose not to question 'why'...
June 18Elaine TocherHowever, I couldn't help but be caught up in and touched by this story. I can only imagine that for anyone whose life has been more of a bumpy ride in any way, this book will be immensely encouraging and empowering. Congratulations and thanks to you and Laura for sharing. Wish I could be at the book launch but will be in Halifax. I will however be bringing my book along on my next trip to Langley for a personal autograph. Until then, love and hugs as always, E xx..
